Wyoming Area School District




The Wyoming Area School District lies along the banks of the Susquehanna River in the Wyoming Valley in northeastern Pennsylvania . The district was formed from the merger of five community schools in 1966. They included Exeter , Exeter Township , West Pittston , West Wyoming , and Wyoming . {Link without Title} It is comprised of four lower schools and one central secondary.

ACADEMICS

The Secondary Center is currently ranked in the top 47 high schools in Pennsylvania {Link without Title} .


Academic Team Achievements

  • Wyoming Area was the regional Science Olympiad competition champion in 2005 and placed in the top ten in the Pennsylvania State Science Olympiad Competition in 2006 and 2007 .

  • Wyoming Area Shore Bowl team finished second in 2003 , 2004 , 2005 and 2006 and finished first and undefeated in 2007 in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl regional competition held annually at Rutgers University in New Jersey .

  • The Wyoming Area JETS team finished second in the regional competition in 2005 .

  • The Wyoming Area Kane Physics Competition team finished first in the competition in 2004 and 2007 while also placing second in 2005 .

  • Wyoming Area has finished first in the ), The Sig Fig Newtons ( 2006 ), and The Bromthymol Blues Brothers ( 2007 ).

  • Michael Coolbaugh and Maria Gubbiotti won the Brain Bee Regional Competition in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Both went on to compete in the International Competition.



TECHNOLOGY

Wyoming Area has been praised numerous times for its integration of technology into curriculums and activities. Furthermore, it sports an outstanding set of extra-curricular activities focused around technology.

Technology Team Achievements

  • At the Great Valley Technology Alliance Computer Competition, Wyoming Area's website design team placed first in 2007 and fourth in 2006.

  • The WA web design team placed second at states for the Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair 2006.

  • Wyoming Area's FBLA has consistently sent members to states for Visual Basic Programming, C++ Programming, Technology Concepts, and Word Processing, among other technology-oriented events.



Extra-curricular technology programs

  • The WAVE - The WAVE, short for Warrior Audio Video Entertainment, is Wyoming Area's own closed-circuit television station, broadcasting live, up-to-the-second announcements through both the televisions and its website.

  • Website design team - An award-winning group of students that competes with other districts from across the state by building and deploying websites for real-life businesses and organizations.

  • Robotics Club - A small club that builds robots and small machines using Lego Mindstorms kits.



Technology Growth

The technology department, built from practically nothing by James Zarra, has been taken over by his replacement, Jason Jones, who continues to innovate in the realm of technology education.


ATHLETICS

Wyoming Area School District has a strong tradition of excellence on the field. They have had several district championship football teams, the most recent in 2004 by defeating our rival school district, Pittston Area by a score of 28 - 21. Several players have gone on to play NCAA Division I Football at schools such as Bucknell University , Syracuse University , and William And Mary . Baseball is also a major sport at Wyoming Area and students are continuously recruited by schools such as Bucknell to play at their institution. In the 2006-2007 school year, the Wyoming Area golf team took a perfect record of 13-0 into the playoffs. They won their first conference title in over 30 years. Other sports include Basketball , Volleyball , Soccer , Field Hockey , Cross Country , Swimming , Track And Field , Tennis , and Marching Band .


EXTRA CURRICULAR PROGRAMS, CLUBS, AND ORGANIZATIONS

The Wyoming Area Secondary Center provides its students with various extracurricular activities aside from sports. These activities include clubs such as the Chess Club, Key Club , Builder's Club , Student Council, Art Club, FBLA , SADD , TATU , and Drama Club. Students achieving a GPA greater than a 3.5 are inducted annually into the National Honor Society . The Journalism Club, Yearbook, and the WAVE (Wyoming Area Visual Entertainment) are some other organizations in which the students may participate.
