HISTORY

Q100 has been in Metro Atlanta , License d to College Park only since early 2001 . Until then, it was in eastern Anniston, Alabama as country music Mega station Alabama 100 ('''WHMA-FM'''), licensed to Anniston now '''The Big 95''' ('''WHMA-FM''') 95.5 MHz .

Original owner, Robert Gammon originally proposed that the station be re-licensed to Sandy Springs , and remain at 100,000 Watt s ERP ( Class C ), but the FCC determined that Sandy Springs was not a true municipality and rather an unincorporated neighborhood of Fulton County. (Ironically, Sandy Springs has since been incorporated into a city in its own right.) Gammon sold the station to Susquehannah after exhausting his funds in persuit of the reallocation. In a revised application before the FCC, Susquehannah proposed a different city of license which actually qualified as a bonafide municipality, College Park. An agreement had been made with the nearest Co-channel station, WSSL-FM in Upstate South Carolina for it to move further away, however the station was sold to Clear Channel Communications in the interim and the agreement was negated. The FCC eventually approved an application to change the city of license to College Park, and the class of the station from C (up to 100 kW at 2000 feet) down to C3 (up to 25 kW at 328 feet.) to protect the licensed signal contour of WSSL. WWWQ also nulls it's signal slightly in the direction of WSSL to stay in compliance with spacing rules.

The move created spectrum space for two new radio stations in Alabama, but forced WGHR and W264AE off the air in the Atlanta area. The FCC later approved an upgrad from class C3 to class C2, which is licensed for 50,000 watts at 500 feet. WWWQ is over 900 feet atop Pechtree Center with 12.5kw, the equivalent to the greater power at the shorter height. The upgrade also meant a slight increase in height as WZGC had recently vacated space higher up on teh mast with a move to a new tower NW of the old site. This upgrade occurred on October 24 , 2005 at 5:00 PM with much fanfare.
