Windows Genuine Advantage Debacle

On August 25th, 2007 the Windows Genuine Advantage program suffered a major breakdown when the authentication servers broke down, effectively leaving all copies of Windows Vista in the world unable to be authenticated as genuine. This caused major chaos, as functionality was disabled and users were left hopelessly trying to discover why their legitimate software was suddenly classified as forgery.

The incident raised questions on the legitimacy of Microsoft having their paying customers depend on a server that can fail and on a policy that considers a software illegitimate until proven legal.
