Information About

West Virginia National Cemetery

HISTORY

In 1975 , after all attempts at determining if it were feasible to expand Grafton National Cemetery resulted in the determination that it was not cost effective, a committee was organized to petition the governor for the development of a new National Cemetery. A 58 acre tract of land which was the cemetery of the West Virginia Industrial School for Boys was selected. It was dedicated on September 27 , 1987 , even though construction was not yet completed, and it opened for interments the following day.

NOTABLE MONUMENTS

  • The Industrial School for Boys monument, a granite memorial erected in 1992 in memory of the residents of the Boys School who were interred in the cemetery between 1890 and 1939.
