Waunarlwydd




A rapidly growing mostly residential area, the pronunciation of Waunarlwydd sounds like "Wine are Lloyd" in English. Despite its ever expanding size the 'Village' as it is still referred to by its inhabitants boasts a small community feel. The local rugby team Waunarlwydd RFC , won promotion to the Welsh Premiership in 2005 and have provided several players to Welsh teams since the clubs inception in 1900.


ECONOMY

Waunarlwydd was the home to a large Aluminium Rolling Operation owned by US company Alcoa . Alcoa announced in November 2006 that it would close the plant by the end of March 2007, with the loss of 298 jobs. Decommissioning works are now taking place, while a small workforce is still employed in homogenisation, where heat treatment takes place for the Kitts Green plant. 298 jobs to go as factory shuts BBC News - 21 November 2006

TIMET , the worlds largest supplier of titanium metals, is now the major employer in the village, with the mill one of four European locations.
