Information About

Virtual Distro

A virtual distro is created by specifying a Configuration of components and the respective sources in which they can be found. A specialized script or tool is then used to Materialize the configuration by assembling the necessary components from those sources. The Buckminster Project provides an example of such a tool. If the configuration and assembly mechanism are associated with a unique URL, then a complex software product can be distributed in the form of an ordinary Web link.

The Distro is referred to as Virtual since its Implementation in the form of Artifacts is decoupled from its creation through Specification of a component configuration.

Proponents of the virtual distro approach argue that it is significantly more efficient than traditional ways of publishing software distros made up of components from disparate, frequently changing sources.
