The Vermont National Guard is composed of the '''Vermont Army National Guard''' and the '''Vermont Air National Guard'''. Together, they are collectively known as the ''''' Green Mountain Boys ''''', despite the inclusion of women in both branches since the mid-twentieth century. Both units use the original flag of the Vermont Republic as their banner.

Army Guard ( 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team )

  • 172nd Armor Regiment ( M1 Abrams tanks)

  • --- 1st Battalion – In 1998, this unit mastered tank table 12 which measures how well a platoon of four tanks can maneuver and engage targets as a team. (Army National Guard armor units are only required to qualify on tank table 8, which measures individual tank skills)

  • --- 2nd Battalion – This unit mastered tank table 12 the year before (in 1997).


  • 1st Battalion - 86th Field Artillery



Air Guard (158th Fighter Wing)

From 1989 to 1997, the fighter wing was an Air Defense Unit, with aircraft on 5-minute alert, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
