From 1962 to 1967, the United States had formal diplomatic ties with Algeria, however diplomatic ties were severed in 1967 under the military dictatorship of Houari Boumédienne .
From 1967 to 1974, the United States had an Interests Section through the Swiss embassy in Algeria.
In 1974, formal diplomatic ties were restored.
