The structure was originally built in 1909 as automobile garage. After a 1921 remodeling, the building became one of the most important jazz venues in Chicago, hosting such acts as Louis Armstrong , Johnny Dodds , Bix Beiderbecke , Jimmy Dorsey , Benny Goodman , Gene Krupa and, especially, Earl "Fatha" Hines . In 1937, the club was renamed the Grand Terrace Cafe, and, with Earl "Fatha" Hines as its long-time bandleader, it became Chicago's most important center for jazz music, introducing under Hines Charlie Parker , Dizzie Gillespie , Sarah Vaughan , Nat "King" Cole and Billy Eckstine among many others - and the dancing of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson . The building later served as a political office and a hardware store until receiving - 06-27 . NOTE |
