Information About

Sumoradio

SumoRadio is a Mashup that combines various radio stations playlists with track & album data from Amazon.com . The SumoRadio service is constantly monitoring radio stations' websites and records changes to their published playlists in real-time. New tracks are cross-referenced to artist, album, and cover art info from Amazon and links are automatically built to iTunes (searches are executed to Apple's Phobos server based on artist/track data) allowing users to purchase tracks through iTunes, Amazon, or other 3rd party services.

History

The service began as a in-house monitoring application for a single radio station in the greater New York metro area. Developer Matthew Knight then expanded the service to include other radio stations/cities from around the United States based on requests from friends and other Early Adopters . SumoRadio first debuted as a public service in March 2006 covering 58 stations in 7 cities.

As more stations and cities were added, so were additional features; such as station-to-station cross referencing and track play history. Sumo's data model therefore seems to store not only detailed track data, but also captures when those tracks have played, at various times and on various stations.

Technical

SumoRadio is built using PHP , MySQL , Apache , Cron , and the JQuery library. External data is pulled from various radio stations' websites and Amazon.com Web Services to build the detailed catalog of albums/artists/tracks seen on the site.
