In athletics, Start is known as the Spartans and sports colors of green, yellow & white. A little known fact about SHS is that they are unique in the fact that their symbol & nickname is the Spartans, but their mascot is a lion. The difference being a symbol is a representative for the team, whereas a mascot is defined as a token item that brings good luck. This dual symbol/mascot theme can be seen in the current SHS field house, where a spartan flanks the left of the SHS alma mater, while a lion flanks the right. Start is most famous for their storied baseball team. In football, start's biggest rival is the ''WHITMER PANTHERS. '' This rivalry is called "The Battle of Tremainsville" since Start is located on the street and Whitmer is located right off of it less than two miles north. In 2003 this rivalry became a Toledo City League contest. Prior to 2003, this game was played the first week of the season. OHIO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
