The Stamps family was one of the first English families (a First Family Of Virginia , FFV) to settle in the New World during the early 17th century. Descendants, mostly aristocrats from Southern states like Virginia and Georgia, have played important although not prominent roles throughout American history. Stamps have volunteered for every major American conflict, especially the American Revolution when one Stamps encouraged all 17 of his sons to enlist in the American Civil War when another Stamps married the niece of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and carried his sword into battle. Stamps founded the small town of Stamps, Arkansas , mentioned in Maya Angelou 's '' I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings ''. There are also Stamps that reside in Newfoundland, Canada and specifically seem to originate from the Flat Rock area which is about a 20-minute drive from the capital city, St. John's. George Moreland Stamps and Thomas Paty Stamps are descendents of this Stamps line. |
