Florida state law chapter 4266, approved June 2 , 1893 , incorporated the South American and International Railroad Company, owned by Albert W. Gilchrist , of Punta Gorda, Florida , John W Whidden , of Arcadia, Florida , and James G. Gibbes , of Columbia, South Carolina ,
  • for the purpose of surveying, locating, constructing, equipping and operating a railroad for the transportation of passengers, produce, goods and all other articles of freight, from some point in the county of Hillsborough , situated on the South Florida Railroad , to some point in the county of Lee , situated on or near the coast of the Gulf Of Mexico , traversing with its main line and branches portions of the counties of Hillsborough , Polk , DeSoto , Manatee , and Lee .

  • The railroad was promised Land Grants along its line, provided construction was begun within two years of the act, and at least six miles were complete within three years.
