Oak Cliff

The formerly separate town of Oak Cliff , annexed by Dallas in 1903, typically is considered geographically part of South Dallas, although culturally Oak Cliff also is linked to the East Dallas area.


EDUCATION

James Madison High School serves students in grades 9-12. Originally named Forest Avenue High School , the school's name and official colors, emblem, and mascot were changed in 1956 at the request of the parents' association and students after the district decided to redesignate the institution as a " Negro School " (the district had not yet agreed to begin Desegregation as specified by the Brown V. Board Of Education decision).

Lincoln High School serves students in grades 9-12.

  • Arthello Beck — African-American artist and gallery owner, graduate of Lincoln HS

  • Chris Bosh of the Toronto Raptors NBA basketball team, graduated Lincoln HS

  • Juanita Craft , Civil Rights activist

  • John Hopps, Jr. — physicist; graduate of Lincoln HS

  • Herbie Johnson, one of the first African-American students to graduate from the University of North Texas (then known as North Texas State College); graduate of Lincoln HS

  • Stanley Marcus — retail and advertising mogul; born in The Cedars, graduate of Forest Avenue HS

  • Larry Johnson -Played NBA for the Charlotte Hornets, also grew up in Dixon.
