(Scripting Language for Unhindered Development of a Gaming Environment) is a shareware adventure game engine developed by Hungry Software. It combines a scripting language with other IDE tools (including a sprite bank editor and a floor region editor). Freeware and commercial adventure games can be created with the engine.
The engine and development kit are freely distributed, meaning that anyone can play and create SLUDGE games. The development kit had certain restrictions which were removed after purchasing a serial number. Because of lack of buyers also the development kit was released as free in 30 December 2006. That was the only change between versions 1.6 and 1.7.
The editor and runtime engine are currently designed for
Windows operating systems, but some developers have found it possible to play sludge games on Intel-based Macintoshes using
WINE .
SLUDGE can create games with any screen resolution (as long as the user's graphics card can handle it) and up to 16-bit colours. Version 1.6 of the SLUDGE engine introduced support for anti-aliased sprites.
- '' Out Of Order '': One of the first SLUDGE games, created by Hungry Software (who also created the SLUDGE engine)
- ''Cubert Badbone, P.I.'': A low-budget adventure game. The first-ever SLUDGE game to release a full version. Italian and Swedish versions also exist.
- ''Frasse and the Peas of Kejick'': A humorous game featuring Frasse, a blue monster. {Link without Title}
