SCHOOL COLORS AND MASCOT

The official colors of Silver Creek are Maroon and Silver. The mascot is a Raptor, which is often depicted as an owl. This has led to controversies over students wearing Hooters shirts to school. Hooters shirts were eventually banned by the administration.

SCHEDULING CONTROVERSIES

Silver Creek has had a history of controversies over the schedule of the school. One of the first of such controversies was the changing of the "access blocks." Students were originally given access blocks which they could use as study halls every Wednesday. Students who were performing well and were caught up were allowed to leave early. The school decided to switch over to having each student spend half of each block in each of their four blocks. Each block was ninety minutes so this meant that on Wednesday each of the four blocks allowed for 45 minutes of class and 45 minutes of study hall. Several of the teachers complained about the shortening of class on Wednesday and access was gradually phased out. In the start of the 2006 school year, the school switched from using its original block schedule where each class was 90 minues long and there were 4 classes per day to using an alternating block were there were still 4 ninety minute blocks, but they rotated by day were students would have "silver day" classes one day and "maroon day" classes. This was done so that core classes such as English, Math, Social Studies, and Science, which previously took half of a school year would require an entire year. This has been met with mixed reactions by students and teachers.
