HISTORY Rugby league has never been played in Greece, but in 2006 the country staged its first international match as well as started a domestic competition. In 1980, Greek-born George Peponis became the first captain of the Australian National Rugby League Team born outside Australia. POPULARITY The popularity of Rugby League in Greece will be known once a domestic competition gets under way in 2006, with an International to be held in Athens in the latter stages of the year. Participation Greece will be staging their inaugural domestic competition in 2006. There are 4 teams to kick the season off with players coming from England, Australia and New Zealand to help out. The primary aim will be to get the Athens populate playing rugby league. The Competition will run for 4-6 weeks with 2 games per week. The length of the competition will increase over time. It will be fully sponsored by a major company based in Greece.
