The regions of Serbia include both geographical and traditional areas. These regions have no official status, and some overlap or have no clearly defined borders. The boundaries of regions in the Pannonian Plain are usually formed by Rivers , while those in Mountainous areas are generally formed by the mountains. In the mountainous areas, regional borders may be defined by mountain ridges, or regions may be considered to include only the habitable areas in the river valleys. Regions defined by river valleys, which often overlap other regions, are conventionally named in Serbian by combining ''po''+(river name)+''je'' (e.g. ''Podrinje'' is an area along Drina river).
