The Punjabi Mafia (''known locally as Sardar - Sir/Sr.'') are loosely, somewhat organized crime families in the Punjab Region , East India , Afghanistan , England , Canada , Australia , USA , and Pakistan . They have controlled the underworld of the Asia for centuries and now most recently of Europe & North America. It originated from one of the worlds oldest known and deadliest " Thuggee " groups, according to historians. Unlike other crime syndicates, the Punjabi mafia is more of a coalition of families (for ex. Johals and Gills), rather than one large criminal body. They carry their criminal instincts using other gangs or individuals using their "money" power, rather than pulling the trigger them self. They do their work behind the scene as chairmans, so their is not much known about them in public or to authorities as its the "underdog" who is known or found guilty due to lack of evidence or unwillingness of witnesses against mafia man himself. IN PUNJAB In the Punjab, the mafia acted as a "second choice" for the locals. If the police or any other officials did not satisfy one's requests, the person might go to the so called mafia, and ask for help but for a price. Continually so, the mafia engaged in extortion, and operating brothels and moonshining rums and liquors known as ''tharra''. The mafia battled other families, or clans for control over more villages in the Punjabi countryside. Eventually the overpopulation in cities like Jalandhar, Ludhiana ,and others drew the mafia's interests. The mafia where known for their bribery skills, and helped illegal immigrants cross into the west. Plus they had contacts in law and police. But during the 1980's with the political unrest in the Punjab, the mafia struggled to stay in place, and pretty soon lost all its power and fled to Europe and Asia. Most recently, It has gained a great deal of power in not only Punjab but the whole Republic of India and neighbouring regions such as Pakistan, Nepal, and somewhat of China. IN THE WEST In the west, the Punjabi mafia is significantly strong yet "invisible", as the justice system puts it. In countries like United States, England and Canada it has, and is gaining a great deal of influence and power, families such as Virks, Gills, and especially Johals and Duttas are known to be mafia families. The most powerful families in Europe and North America are the Johal, Dutta and Bains families who run billion dollar business empire. In the United Kingdom, especially in the 1960's and today, the Punjabi mafia families own many illegal brothels, moon-shining stills, clubs, restaurants etc in London or other busy cities. In Canada, especially around Vancouver and Toronto, there is growing gang violence and police have placed some of the blame on the Punjabi mafia. There, many officials believe that Punjabi families are involved with gang activity and rising violence. One CBC documentary stated that Punjabi mafia men are very hard to arrest because they are usually respected business owners with only indirect ties to local gangs. Since 2000, the Punjabi mafia has been blamed for killing as many as sixty four prominent businessmen. Justin Johal, son of rich businessman and member of Johal family had been widely rumored to have extensive ties to organized criminal activity in Western Canada but no charges against him were ever laid. The Punjabi mafia are very good at maintaining a distance between themselves and contracted gangs and police have had little success in achieving any convictions. The Punjabi mafia families on the West Coast of North America are expanding their operations. The West Coast has become a gold mine for Jatt Punjabi's like the Johal's and Gill's, because of the transportation and real-estate company's they own. They use their transportation companies' trucks and ships to move cocaine north to Canada and pot south to the states. North American gangs with links to the Punjabi mafia may include the Latin Kings, Bloods, Crips, and the Hells Angels .
