Information About

Patent Engineer

Most patent scientists or engineers hold at least a Bachelor's Degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, with many holding advanced degrees such as Ph.D. s or M.D. s. It is rare for a patent scientist or engineer to hold a Law Degree as such individuals are usually Patent Attorney s.

Patent scientists and engineers often pursue either patent agent qualification and/or attend Law School (this applies in the U.S. but not in Europe) to become patent attorneys. "''It is possible to enter the European Patent Attorney examination after three years of experience as a patent engineer.''" in http://www.ip.philips.com, ''Join the Intellectual Economy! Enjoy technology, but crave more? A career as Patent Engineer offers you a unique combination of business and technology.'' 2004. Consulted on May 23, 2007. In this respect, they are often referred to as trainees.

The positions are also sometimes regarded as the Private Sector equivalent of Patent Examiner s, in that the positions sit in largely reciprocal positions with regards to a patent application.
