The town is located close to the mouth of the Yamhill River at the Willamette River , near Palmer Creek for powering machinery, and was available for Joel Palmer to claim. {Link without Title}

Joel Palmer laid out the town of Dayton on his Donation Land claim, where he operated a sawmill, a hotel, and several other enterprises.
