Oak Forest was established in 1946 by Oak Forest Realty Corporation. Oak Forest Realty Corporation was owned by Frank Sharp , a developer who later started Sharpstown .

Oak Forest was originally an unincorporated area in Harris County . It was annexed by the city of Houston in 1949 .

It is served by Oak Forest Branch of Houston Public Library .
