HISTORY Precursor agencies In 1886, Thomas L. Marsalis incorporated the city of Oak Cliff, Texas. The area lay due south west of Dallas, just beyond the Trinity River . To entice future residents, Marsalis created the Oak Cliff Elevated Railway , a steam powered streetcar line and bridge, which provided the crucial link from Dallas' downtown, into the center of his new development. By 1894, the steam powered line had been removed, and replaced by an electric streetcar system. By the late 1940's, Oak Cliff had developed into a thriving Streetcar Suburb , with over twenty miles of lines stretching throughout the suburb. In 1956, streetcar service ceased throughout Dallas. Creation of OCTA OCTA was created in 2006 as a research group, whose purpose was to study the redevelopment of Oak Cliff's streetcar system. Within a year, the group had solidified its board of directors, including former McKinney Avenue Transit Authority engineers, and area activists. EXTERNAL LINKS |
