North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center




The following facilities are located at the theatre:

  • Belk Theater - The largest venue in the center, with seating for 2,100 people.

  • Booth Playhouse - A courtyard-style proscenium theatre with cabaret and theater-in-the-round capabilities with seating for 434 people.


Under the purview of the center, but located at Spirit Square are the following facilities:

  • McGlohon Theatre - With seating for 700, it is located at the Spirit Square Center for Arts & Education, it opened in 1980 and was originally a First Baptist Church.

  • Duke Power Theatre - A black box theatre with seating for 190.


The resident companies at the center include:


Funding for the center was provided by many sources, including $15 million from the State of North Carolina, a $15 million bond referendum approved by the citizens of Charlotte, and an additional $32 million contributed by individuals, corporations and foundations. The land for the center was donated by the Belk Brothers Company in 1987 .

Currently, the President and CEO of the Blumenthal is Tom Gabbard .
