The museum was founded by Melvin Simpson and opened in 1975 . It is intended to promote community pride in their heritage. The museum covers the achievements of black North America ns, starting with their original Africa n culture, chronicling the years of Slavery , and finishing with modern achievements. The church was built by former U.S. Slaves and Free Black s. It was restored and reopened in 2001 ; it has been designated a National Historic Site by the Canadian federal government.
