New Mexico United States Senate Election, 2008

The New Mexico Senate Election of 2008 will be held on November 4 , 2008 .

The election could be an open contest, because Incumbent Senator Pete Domenici , a Republican Party (United States) , has hinted that he might not seek reelection. Domenici's age also contributes to speculation. Dominici lost his chairmanship after Republicans lost control of the Senate in the 2006 Senate election, which may also incline Dominici against running. In February 2007, however, Domenici indicated his intention to run for re-election.1

A retirement by Domenici could open up New Mexico's . That seat is currently held by Republican Heather Wilson , who has indicated that she might run for the Senate if Domenici retires. The district is Democratic-leaning and was one of the most competitive districts in the 2006 congressional election. Wilson could possibly face a re-match with former Attorney General Patricia Madrid if she chooses to run for Senate.

Domenici and Wilson are both being investigated by the Senate for their roles in the dismissal of prosecutor David Iglesias , which could impact their chances in their respective races.

Small business owner Don Wiviott , a Democrat, announced he will seek the seat held by Domenici, also Jim Hannan has announced he will run as well.
