Until 2003, the NJDOT was responsible for the operation of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which was re-established as the self-operating New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The NJDOT was also responsible for maintaining and procuring equipment for the state's bus and train operations. Notable are the 800+ Flxible bus order, the EMD GP40P s for the Central Railroad Of New Jersey , the GE U34CH locomotives and Comet I cars for the Erie Lackawanna , and the almost Amtrak-esque appearance of 1970s NJ commuter trains with mixtures of cars from the Chicago, Rock Island And Pacific Railroad , Great Northern , Santa Fe , Burlington Northern , Penn Central , and the Central Railroad of New Jersey.
