VOTING TRENDS Rush Holt was elected in 1998 after a closely contested race. His re-election in 2000 was also very close, as the district was evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. In Redistricting following the United States Census, 2000 , Democratic areas were moved into the district from adjacent districts and Holt has been winning by much more comfortable margins. In the '', November 8 , 2006 Interestingly enough, according to Politics NJ the bare-bones campaign of Joseph Sinagra against Rush Holt received 35% of the vote, just 2% less than former Secretary Of State Of New Jersey Buster Soaries won in 2002 after spending $1 million and in a better year for Republicans.
