New Hartford is a Town in Oneida County , New York , United States . As of the 2000 Census , the town population was 21,172. The name of New Hartford was provided by a settler family from Hartford, Connecticut . The Town of New Hartford contains a village, also named New Hartford . New Hartford is the largest Suburb of Utica, New York , which is located directly north of the town and village. HISTORY The name "New Hartford" was given to the small town by the Kellogg family that arrived from Hartford, CT, in 1772, becoming the very first settlers. The Town of New Hartford was settled in 1788 by Jedediah Sanger, who was 37 years old and deep in debt. All of his previously owned property had been destroyed by a fire. Sanger bought 1,000 acres (4 km&2) of land, each acre for $.50. The first building, his home, went up in 1789. He and his family then set upon building a saw mill, and later a grist mill in 1790. This marked the beginning of the town of New Hartford. Amongst the town's accomplishments are: the first ingrain loom, the first cut nails, manufactured by Johnathan Richardson. Johnathan Edwards, Jr., son of the American theologain and writer, founded the Presbyterian Church in 1791, as the First Religious Society of Whitestown. The second cotton mill in New York state, the New Hartford Manufacturing Co. was incorporated on March 9th, 1810. As the town grew, it incorporated hotels, a blacksmith, a harness shop, a bakery, a drug store, and a draper each in his own building. For its early years, New Hartford had no governmental organization, and was one of the many communities within the . Recent history New Hartford's high school, New Hartford Senior High , was voted number 129 in the top schools in the country by Newsweek . {Link without Title} The school offers twelve other Advanced Placement courses, including AB Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, English Literature, English Language, Spanish, French, United States History, Psychology, Comparative Government, Biology, and Microeconomics. In addition to the Advanced Placement language courses, New Hartford also offers four or more years of language instruction in German, French, Spanish and Latin. 42% of New Hartford residents ages 25 and older have a bachelor's or advanced college degree. New Hartford has experienced heavy commercial growth in the past several years and now is considered the commercial center of the Utica-Rome area for shopping. The majority of growth has been on the west end of the town bordering Whitesboro and Kirkland . The south and east sides of town are largely suburban and are becoming increasingly populated. New Hartford's junior high boasts three bands, two orchestras, jazz band, and several choir and chorale groups. The high school has a similar number of music groups. New Hartford has three public elementary schools: Myles Elementary, Bradley Elementary (formerly Oxford Rd. Elementary), and Hughes Elementary. Which school a student attends is determined by the student's geographic location, not merit or other factors. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 66.0 Km&2 (25.5 Mi&2 ). 65.7 km&2 (25.4 mi&2) of it is land and 0.3 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it (0.39%) is water. The east town line is the border of Herkimer County . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census &2 of 2000, there were 21,172 people, 8,601 households, and 5,625 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 322.1/km&2 (834.1/mi&2). There were 9,084 housing units at an average density of 138.2/km&2 (357.9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 96.03% White , 0.80% Black or African American , 0.10% Native American , 2.34% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.21% from Other Races , and 0.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population. There were 8,601 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% were Married Couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 30.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.94. In the town the population was spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males. The median income for a household in the town was $45,991, and the median income for a family was $60,843. Males had a median income of $40,046 versus $28,532 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $26,528. About 3.4% of families and 5.0% of the population were below the Poverty Line , including 4.4% of those under age 18 and 6.5% of those age 65 or over.
