The organization's first support meeting was held on March 29, 1993. Some of the organization’s goals are to reach out to other Mothers and families who have lost a Child to the violent act of murder and to offer support during their time of sorrow and Grief . The organization also provide purple ribbons, symbol of nonviolence to grieving families as well as balloon lifts.

In the 14 years since its founding, MOMO has evolved into a respected nonprofit organization with paid staffers and dozens of volunteers, who've stood beside more than 500 families during their most difficult time. In recent times, Sumpter, Williams and her son, David Howard, remain closely involved.


TRIVIA


Mothers of Murdered Offspring's official color is Purple - a color the organization has used from the beginning because it was Shawna D.Hawk's favorite. Purple is also the urban national symbol for Nonviolence .

Mothers of Murdered Offsping is nationally noted in the January 1996 issue of Essence Magazine and in the March 1997 issue of now-defunct Emerge Magazine.

Co-founder Dee Sumpter was recognized in the 2001 Essence Awards as well as being featured in the hard-cover Essence 50 of the Most Inspiring African Americans.
