Dean, a graduate of Emerson College , worked as a local radio and television reporter for stations in Massachusetts and New York State before joining CBS in 1967 . There, he specialized in coverage of the U.S. Space Program , and eventually made his name as an all-purpose war correspondent. During much of his tenure at CBS, Dean anchored weekend editions of '' CBS Evening News ,'' while occasionally filling in on weeknights for regular anchor Walter Cronkite . He left CBS in 1985 and worked freelance for some time until joining ABC in 1988 . He continued to serve in a foreign affairs milieu, all the while adding coverage of presidential elections to his resume. For some years, he anchored the newscasts on the network's '' Good Morning America .'' More recent years have witnessed Dean doing voiceover work for documentaries on A&E and The History Channel , in addition to writing a book on fitness.
