Monroe County is a County located in the U.S. State of Missouri . The county was organized in 1831 and named for U.S. President James Monroe . As of 2000 , the population is 9,311. Its County Seat is Paris 6 . GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,736 Km&2 (670 Mi&2 ). 1,673 km&2 (646 mi&2) of it is land and 63 km&2 (24 mi&2) of it (3.62%) is water. Major highways DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 9,311 people, 3,656 households, and 2,566 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 6/km&2 (14/mi&2). There were 4,565 housing units at an average density of 3/km&2 (7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 94.66% White , 3.83% Black or African American , 0.41% Native American , 0.12% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.16% from Other Races , and 0.78% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 24.7% were of German , 23.2% American , 14.2% English and 11.8% Irish ancestry according to Census 2000 . There were 3,656 households out of which 31.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% were Married Couples living together, 7.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% were non-families. 26.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02. In the county the population was spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.10 males. The median income for a household in the county was $30,871, and the median income for a family was $36,895. Males had a median income of $26,534 versus $20,440 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $14,695.
