Born in Lyme, Connecticut , Sterling was graduated from Yale College in 1804. He studied law at the Litchfield (Connecticut) Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1809 and commenced the practice of law in Adams, New York . He moved to Watertown, New York , in 1809 and continued the practice of his profession. Held several local offices. Treasurer of the village of Watertown in 1816. He served as a director of the Jefferson County Bank. Sterling was elected as a Federalist to the Seventeenth Congress ( March 4 , 1821 - March 3 , 1823 ). He resumed the practice of law. He served as member of the state senate 1836-1839. He died in Watertown, New York , April 11 , 1844 . He was interred in Brookside Cemetery. SOURCE |
