Medina is a well established suburb built to service the needs of Immigrants working on the Kwinana Industrial strip during the 1950's. The housing is typical of this era (for Western Australia)and similar to the suburb of Hilton. Mostly the houses are built with Jarrah hardwood and almost all of them feature Jarrah hard wood floors. Deconstructing a cottage also reveals that all the internal structures are Jarrah. The blocks on which the houses sit are also very large, with most blocks at or above 730m2. Medina gained a reputation for social issues during the 70's, 80's and 90's due to a very high percentage of government housing (78%), however nowdays the percentage is down to 7.2% and the suburb is undergoing a renaissance in growth and demographics. Recently the Government announced an injection of $1.6bn for improvements in infrastructure, community based programs and infrastructure and new medium density housing around the centre of the Kwinana area. |
