Information About

Medicine Grizzlybear Lake

In the 1970s he moved to California to teach at Humboldt State University . He married a Yurok medicine woman, Tela Donahue Hawk (a.k.a. Star Hawk, a.k.a. Tela Starhawk), and became interested in local Native traditions. The resulting book ''Chilula'' (1982), about, among other things, the spiritual practices of Athabaskan tribes of northern California, angered local elders for violating sacred knowledge they said they had given him in confidence (as reported by the anthropologist Thomas Buckley ).

His book ''Native Healer'' (1991) describes Native American spiritual practices and concepts for a mostly-non-Native New Age audience.
