Manufacturing Message Specification

Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) is an ISO 9506 standard. Control Networks uses the MMS protocol and a reduced OSI Stack with the TCP/IP protocol in the transport/network layer, and Ethernet and/or RS-232C as physical media. This means that all communication handling will be the same, regardless of network type and connected devices. The protocol defines communication messages transferred between controllers as well as between the engineering station and the controller (e.g. downloading an application or reading/writing variables). It has been developed especially for industrial applications.

Basically MMS is an application level protocol that provides for 'peer to peer' real-time communications over a network. The key to implementation was the creation of the virtual manufacturing ddvice (VMD), the VMD is classed as a MMS object with at least one network visible address.
