Mansfield High School, a part of the Mansfield Independent School District , serves portions of Mansfield and Grand Prairie . HISTORY Since Mansfield High School opened in 1909, it has been housed in at least six different buildings, with the latest move coming in 2002. On August 30, 1956, a mob surrounded the school to protest the enrollment of three African-American students in what became known as the Mansfield School Desegregation Incident . The National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People had sued the Mansfield school district over its segregation of black schoolchildren. When a federal court ordered the district to desegregate--the first time a Texas school district received such an order--many white citizens resisted. Vigilantes barred integration sympathizers from entering town, whites hanged three blacks in effigy, and downtown businesses closed in support of the demonstrations. Governor Allan Shivers authorized the Mansfield school board to transfer black students to Fort Worth, seventeen miles away, and dispatched Texas Rangers to uphold the district's policy of segregation. The successful defiance of the federal court order helped inspire the passage of state segregation laws in 1957, delaying integration for several years. The Mansfield school district quietly desegregated in 1965). It was a very small school until about 1990, when Mansfield began to expand on a major scale. The school district opened new high schools, including Summit , Timberview and Legacy, to relieve Mansfield High School. BASIC OPERATION Like the other schools in the Mansfield Independent School District (MISD) the school is on an Accelerated Block Schedule. This means that the students go to eight blocks total, four in the fall and four in the spring. Every semester they get four credits for those classes. The chain of command in the school is also unique to the standard format of high schools. Although they have a principal, the school includes four associate principals (each assigned to a division of students alphabetically). ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Mansfield's mascot is the tiger and the school colors are black and gold. Their athletic programs includes Baseball , Basketball , Cross Country , Football , Golf , Powerlifting , Soccer , Softball , Swimming , Tennis , Track & Field and Volleyball . The MHS Swim Team has won district every year since the team was established. NOTABLE ALUMNI
