The Manchester Airports Group is a holding company owned by the ten Borough s of the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester , England . MAG was formed in 2001 to own and run Manchester Airport and the other smaller acquisitions. Prior to that the Manchester Airport Board operated Manchester Airport from 1986, when the County Council of Greater Manchester was disbanded. A majority share (55%) is owned by the city of Manchester , and the other boroughs own 5% each. Since its spin-off, it has branched out into other ventures. In addition to Manchester Airport, it now owns Bournemouth International Airport , East Midlands Airport , and the smaller Humberside International Airport .
