Management Science And Information Systems Studies

MSISS, or ''' Management Science and Information Systems Studies''', is an Undergraduate Degree offered in Trinity College Dublin . The broad course offers insights into areas such as Economics , Maths , Statistics , Business Studies and Computer Science .

INTRODUCTION

A highly employable degree programme in Trinity College Dublin.

MSISS was originally set up in 1980 to provide a degree for Engineer s that would have a greater emphasis on management science and quantitative methods than was to be found in traditional Engineering degrees; until 1995, it was called Management Science and Industrial Systems Studies. Over the past 25 years the programme has continuously evolved and changed so that, at this stage, its roots in engineering have almost disappeared to be replaced by a focus on modern information systems. Today's MSISS programme is designed to bridge a different gap - that between business, information technology and management science.

This change reflects changes in Society and Technology and in particular what our own Graduates tell us about what is happening out there in the world of work. The demand for graduates with both business and quantitative skills and a firm understanding of information technology has grown rapidly over the past ten years and is likely to continue to increase for the foreseeable Future . MSISS is about many things, but in particular it is about learning how to solve problems and work with others, two skills that will always be in demand.

The primary objective of the MSISS programme is to produce graduates who are numerate as well as Business and Computer literate and who have a solid understanding of how to approach and solve practical problems using a variety of tools and techniques.

MSISS is hard work. There is no doubting this. But its enjoyable 'cause the class is so close.

It all pays off as it is probably the best non-professional degree in the country for employment. It affords the opportunity to enter the highest paying jobs in Investment Banking and Management Consulting .

The only other thing about it is relatively few people (other than employers and career guidance people) have heard of it!

JOB PROSPECTS

Because MSISS students are trained in Business, Quantitative Methods, Information Technology and personal skills, they are highly flexible and well equipped for today's job market where employers look for adaptable and widely skilled young people who can handle the pace of modern business.

MSISS graduates work in a wide range of fields. Popular career choices include Management Consultancy , Financial Services and Information Systems . Other graduates have gone on to successful careers in General Management , Quality Control and Statistical Analysis . There are also opportunities to specialise in more technical computing and management areas. MSISS is a challenging course and its graduates are highly regarded, thus employment prospects are very high. In recent years good MSISS graduates have had several job offers well before they even sat their finals (sometimes even before they had started their final year!) and all students who wanted to work (as opposed to seeing the world) have found jobs with good employers within a few months of completing their final Examination .

MSISS LIFE

The big plus with the course is its class size of 24, which makes meeting people and getting to know fellow students much easier than a course like BESS or Engineering. It also means that people are much more willing to help each other and work together, which is very important in a team-centred course like MSISS. There is a strong sense of Community within the course.

The MSISS Society also means that there are many inter-year nights out, which are always enjoyable occasions, and one major weekend trip a year. Students from each year get to know each other very well through the duration of the course, especially after the MSISS Soccer League, which is always a bitterly fought competition with a lot of pride at stake.

SIGNIFICANT STUDENTS, STAFF & ALUMNI

Kevin "Humpo" Humphreys - Now a memebeer of the MSISS alumni, he is famous for being the first (and only) student from the course to win the college wide 'Student of the Year' award. He received this award for receiving a first class honours in first year, despite some minor mental disabilities. His receival of the award was lauded by fellow student John O'Donoghue as "being a marvellous achievement. We're all aware of Humops' difficulties and it's such a thrill for everybody who knows him for him to be honoured in this way." His progression through to graduation from tthe course has amazed both students and staff alike.
