The Malagasy presidential election, 2001 was held on 16 December 2001 . President Of Madagascar Didier Ratsiraka sought re-election, having been elected at the 1996 Presidential Election . Official results saw him take 40% of the vote to Marc Ravalomanana 's 46%. As Ravalomanana did not appear to have won a majority, a Run-off Election was scheduled for early 2002. However, Ravalomanana claimed that the poll had not been counted correctly and that he had won a majority in the first round. Ravalomanana was sworn in as President on 22 February 2002 (and again on May 6 ) and fought Ratsiraka's supporters for control of the country. In early July Ratsiraka fled the country and Ravalomanana became the uncontested leader of Madagascar . |
