Maine-Anjou cattle (in French: Maine-Anjou, Rouge des Prés) is a Cattle Breed of the Anjou region in West France . BREED HISTORY First developed in the 1840's, the cattle were originally meant to be work animals and dual purpose animals, with the mothering and dairy traits being taken from the Mancelle, and the beef traits from the English Shorthorn. Today the Maine-Anjou is primarily a beef breed. It was originally called the Durham-Mancelle. It was later called the Maine-Anjou, because the breed is raised in the French provinces of Maine and Anjou . BREED DESCRIPTION The cattle are red and white (sometimes black or Roan ) and have horns. They are big animals (cows: 142 cm, 800 kg; bulls: 152 cm, 1,200 kg). They are bred not only for their ease of handling and docile nature but also their high growth rates and marbling throughout their meat. REFERENCES
