The Long Beach Police Department provides law enforcement for the city of Long Beach , California , USA .


HISTORY


In 2004, the department introduced Taser s and distributed them to officers. Results show that officer injuries were down by 25 percent, damage claims down by 33 percent, and arrests up by two percent.

On October 2, 2005, the Long Beach Police Department lost police dog "Ranger" while searching for a parolee suspect. SWAT officers were deployed and ordered the suspect to surrender. "Ranger" was deployed and the suspect shot "Ranger" once on the chest. "Ranger" was taken to an animal hospital in Tustin and died while in surgery. {Link without Title}

"Ranger" was part of the department for two years. His handler, Officer Steve Parcells, had a replacement weeks later.
