Long Beach is a small coastal settlement in Otago , New Zealand . Many of the sections were initially auctioned in October 1922 for a pound deposit. It is located within the city limits of Dunedin , and lies 15 kilometres northeast of the city centre, between Blueskin Bay and the mouth of the Otago Harbour . The small settlement of Purakanui is located nearby. As the name suggests, the picturesque Long Beach township is situated close to a beach that stretches 2.4 kilometres along the coast. There is a range of bird life present on the beach and the lagoon area, such as blue penguins, seals, terns, pukekos, heron, spoon billed herons and ducks. Of the 100 or so dwellings most maintain the 'typical kiwi crib' though in recent times some have been replaced or upgraded to a holiday home. The beach is regarded as one of Dunedin's safest swimming beaches as it lies within a bay and is seldom affected by swells. The beach has rock formations at both ends and a white sandy beach in between. At the beaches' western end there are two caves and rock climbing cliffs which prove popular with students, the general public and schools excursions. The domain area of the beach is frequented by families, holiday makers, tourists and bus loads of Otago University students during orientation week. A motivated Long Beach community group has been extensively beautifying the area through mass planting of native flora in reserve areas. The infamous and notable movie "Out of the Blue" was also primarily filmed at Long Beach. |
