Limnology (from Greek: Λίμνη ''limne'', "lake"; and λόγος, ''logos'', "knowledge") is the study of inland waters (fresh), including their Biological , Physical , Chemical , Geological and Hydrological aspects. This includes the study of (natural and man-made) Lake s and Pond s, River s and Stream s, Wetland s and Groundwater s. François-Alphonse Forel (1841-1912) established the field with his studies of Lake Geneva . Limnology traditionally is closely related to Hydrobiology , which is concerned with the application of the principles and methods of physics, chemistry, Geology , and Geography to Ecological problems.
