Lewis Michael Arquette ( December 14 1935 – February 10 2001 ) was an American Film Actor , Writer and Producer . Arquette was well known as "J. D. Pickett" on the TV series, '' The Waltons '', where he worked from 1978-1981. FAMILY Lewis Arquette was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late comic actor Cliff Arquette , best remembered for his "Charley Weaver" character, a fixture on the original '' Hollywood Squares ''. He was part of the famous Arquette-Cox Family . He was the father of actors Patricia , Alexis Arquette , Rosanna , David and Richmond Arquette . He is the father-in-law of actress Courteney Cox and actor Thomas Jane and the former father-in-law of actor Nicolas Cage . Arquette frequently appeared in movies with his sons. In 1963 , Arquette moved his family to Chicago, where he managed The Second City theater for several years. In 1970 the family moved to a Commune in Front Royal, Virginia . His wife, Brenda "Mardi" Nowak, died in 1997 from Breast Cancer . Mardi was Jewish and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor from Poland .
