"Leatherman" is a song by Pearl Jam . It first appeared as a B-side on the " Given To Fly " single. It was originally recorded during the sessions for Pearl Jam 's fifth album, '' Yield ''. The band decided not to include the song on the B-sides and rarities compilation, '' Lost Dogs ''. The song is also a part of the so-called "Man" trio (" Better Man ", " Nothingman ", "Leatherman") played occasionally at concerts. There is no connection between the three songs beyond the word "man" being in each of their titles. A performance of "Leatherman" can be found on the DVD '' Touring Band 2000 ''. LYRICAL MEANING The song was inspired by the Leatherman , a Vagabond of unconfirmed identity who traveled a circuit between the Connecticut and Hudson River s from 1858-1889.
