The village was recorded in Domesday as Chingestone. A discovery of late Iron Age cremation urns was discovered in '''1974''' at Elizabeth Villa along the High Street. The findings were placed in an Oxford museum.

The village contains one pub, The Cherry Tree, and a large playing field where the parish's main events, such as the May Day are held.
