The race is named for King's Bishop, a 3-year-old colt originally owned by Craig F. Cullinan Jr. that was purchased as a yearling at Keeneland for $72,000. His Graded Stakes Race victories at three were 7 of 15 starts, including the Pontiac Grand Prix Stakes and the Michigan Mile .

The Stakes record is held by Pomeroy at a time of 1:20 4/5, set in 2004.

The race was not run in 1986.
