BACKGROUND

From 1960 to 1963, the team was known as the Dallas Texans until their relocation to Kansas City, Missouri . The team also participated in the American Football League 's Annual Player Draft from 1960 to 1969 until their Alignment to the National Football League in 1970 . Since 1970, the team has participated in the National Football League's annual player draft.

The Chiefs have only had the first overall selection in the draft once in franchise history, coming in 1963 when the team traded Quarterback Cotton Davidson to the Oakland Raiders for the selection. The franchise has selected two players in the first round in the same year on four different occasions, coming in 1963, 1968, 1979, and 1984. The team has also traded away their first pick five times, coming in 1973, 1975, 1993, 2001, and 2004.

Like most teams in the NFL, the Chiefs have never drafted a fullback, placekicker, or punter in the first round of the NFL Draft. Running backs are the most commonly selected by the Chiefs in the first round, with 10 coming since 1960.
