Jefferson City High School, also known as JCHS, is a public secondary school in Jefferson City, Missouri. JCHS is one of five public high schools in Cole County. ATHLETICS Since its beginnings, Jefferson City High School has proven to be one of the winningest schools for athletics in the state, competing in the top ranks of almost every sport. Since 1976, the Jays athletic teams combined have earned 29 state championships, 29 second-place state finishes, 118 top-four state finishes, and 225 district titles. Football
Since the inception of the state football championship tournament, the Jays have won 10 state championships, more than any other school in Missouri, followed by Kansas City Rockhurst 's seven. In 2004, JCHS became the first public high school to win 600 games. Jays football is also rich in history. During the 1960's, the team had the highest winning percentage in the nation for that period in time: 94.8%. Their longest winning streak, 71 games, ended after 1966, and at the time was also the nation's longest winning streak. Much legacy came to the team with the arrival of Pete Adkins, the 24th head football coach of the school. Adkins is the fourth-winningest high school football coach in history, with a brilliant 405-60-4 record at Missouri high schools Centralia and Jefferson City, according to the National High School Sports Record Book. In 44 years, he had an 86.8 percent winning record, and nine large-school state championships. Adkins' last year at Jeff City provided his milestone 400th victory and also a major surprise when Terry Adkins, the middle of his three sons and a former Jays football player, flew in from Oregon to speak at the annual homecoming assembly. The school recently hired new head coach Ted LePage, who hopes to turn the team around from its recent losing ways, and ultimately return the team to the glory that it had for so many years.
